The Executive of the Chamber has been active in the ongoing consultation by State Government into the future of the Southport Spit, through former president Laird Marshall, vice president Noel Grummitt and Executive member Brett James.
The process has been through 3 community workshop sessions to date and a range of pop-up display sessions around the Coast since the process started in August of 2017.
Workshop 3 was held in December to review ‘The Spit Master Plan Options Report’ released in October last year. The options report (refer https://haveyoursay.dsdmip.qld.gov.au/30703/documents/91000/download) provided a range of different options for the various precincts identified for the Spit and the Workshop was intended to identify the preferred options for each of the precincts.
As a result of public input provided last year to the Options Report and the December workshop, the draft master plan will be finalised and released to the public in February/ March of this year for public response and a final community workshop early in April before the Master Plan is finalised and released.
The final stage of the process will involve formulation of the legal framework to give effect to the Master Plan which is scheduled to occur by August of 2019.
The final plan will primarily restrict development to the southern portions already developed, with enhanced facilities and connections to provide the public with greater access and appreciation of the natural attributes of the Spit. The 3 storey development height for development will be locked in.
Welcome to our new look branding and website. These are just some of the changes being implemented by the Chamber’s new Board this year.
Some other changes being rolled out include membership investment tailored to the size of your business with the option of paying the annual fees on a monthly basis. Please explore our website for more information to enable your business to join the peak body representing business in and around the Southport CBD.
We are also working on new sponsorship opportunities for those members wanting to invest further in supporting the Chamber’s work and at the same time getting the opportunity to strategically market their business to members and guests of the Chamber.
With a strong membership support base we can better advocate for and support business on various issues including Local, State and Federal Government issues.
Join us for one of our breakfast meetings and be inspired and informed by a diverse range of speakers. Come to one of our evening functions to socialise and build partnerships with other local businesses.
Southport is predicted to be one of the fastest growing areas in the country over the next 10 years. At the present time a significant proportion of the businesses in Southport have no more than 2 employees.
Don’t work in a vacuum. Find synergies with other businesses and mentors by engaging with the Southport Chamber of Commerce business community.
If you represent an organisation with a significant involvement in Southport as a stakeholder, (School, Industry Organisation, Not for Profit etc), then contact us to get involved in the Southport Community Consultative Committee, a group facilitated by the Chamber, which meets with representatives of Council, State and Federal Government, Police, Health and Education to share and disseminate information of interest and relevance to Southport.
As the Southport Chamber’s new president I look forward to meeting members and guests at our regular events to discuss what we can all do to grow the CBD and the City in the interests of all our businesses.
In a nutshell, the Board have decided we can serve the Businesses in our Region better as a stand-alone Chamber and not as a "Southport Division" of another Chamber that also have Divisions of Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh, Nerang, Robina etc.
Southport is the recognised CBD which is experiencing by far the largest growth over the next 10 plus years, with a higher per Capita Income for Employees than other Regions and we believe a purposeful Key Region approach is better than a fragmented one when championing the Gold Coast as a serious place to establish and expand a Business.
Whilst other Regions have strengths in their chosen focus, we believe the growth of certain National and International markets are those we can more than accommodate, thus we are having serious discussions with major Stakeholders to ensure we do our best to do justice to those here now and cement the Southport major Development focus.
