Despite widely varying opinions about the status of SARS-Cov-2 and the reticence around public health care, Australian businesses (and the economy) continue to be battered by Covid-induced absenteeism and disruption. Sick leave from fever and coughs is already five times last year’s levels, with the latest Flu Tracking data showing 2.25 per cent of people off work from sickness, compared with the five-year average of 1.5 per cent.

It is no secret that I have had concerns with the effectiveness of the Southport PDA (Priority Development Area) planning scheme. Its intent is to generate growth in the CBD by removing development barriers and increasing investment opportunities. It is debatable whether it is has delivered on this over the past decade. That is why I have requested a review of the scheme to see how we can make it fit for service for the future of our CBD.

Business performance improves in June quarter but Queensland and national economy outlook deteriorates

It has been a huge month for Southport with a number of events and activities taking place across the business community.

The City of Gold Coast (CoGC) is investing $3 million into a ‘Play Money Rewards' program to support the city’s tourism, dining, retail, and arts and culture industries. The program will be facilitated by Destination Gold Coast (DGC).

Applications open mid-August for a $5000 grant to SMEs operating within the 11 LGAs affected by the latest lockdown.

A High Court today ruled casual workers are not entitled paid leave benefits in line with permanent employment contracts.

Southport is the Gold Coast’s Central Business District and while it may be smaller in comparison to other capital city CBD’s, Southport has seen enormous growth over the past few years as it transforms into an active and vibrant commercial hub for the Gold Coast.

Residual funding is available to support the development of female leaders in QLD.

The initiative is providing women with grants of between $2,000 and $7,000 to enable participation in one of three programs that cover such things as reinforcing resilience and wellbeing, engaging with challenge and conflict, creating future focus, leading authentically and driving performance.

The Executive of the Chamber has been active in the ongoing consultation by State Government into the future of the Southport Spit, through former president Laird Marshall, vice president Noel Grummitt and Executive member Brett James.
