Mayor Commits To Rocket-Charge the CBD
Dear fellow Chamber members,
Please know the Mayor and I are working together to realise the transformation of the CBD.
Mayor Tate last week pledged to fight for a Supreme Court – and Federal Court – for the city, given huge delays being reported in the justice system.
This project would rocket-charge the Southport CBD and equally, improve the wait times for victims of crime.
“We are a city of sufficient size to warrant our own Supreme Court facilities, as well as Federal Court operations,” said Mayor Tate.
“The number of cases involving not only Gold Coast residents, but people in the immediate vicinity, shows that the facilities are long overdue.
“Those cases currently head to Brisbane on the M1 meaning more traffic, more inconvenience and more delays for everyone involved.
“Now is the time for the State and Federal governments to sign on, as head tenants, for a new purpose-built facility in Southport.’’
Mayor Tate said he would ask City of Gold Coast (Council) to consider:
- Doing a joint venture with private enterprise to construct the facility on Mal Burke Carpark, immediately adjacent the Southport Magistrates Court;
- Ensure there was no overall loss of public carparking for the community; and
- Ensure ratepayers achieve a revenue income from the project, given the land would be offered up as part of a joint venture.
In other news, Councillors on the Lifestyle and Community Committee (pictured) recently signed off on the ‘Streets of Remembrance’ veterans pilot program.
Southport streets named after local ANZACs will be among a proposed 25 city-wide streets that will receive a beautiful ‘Rising Sun’ or ‘Poppy’ badge as a sign of gratitude to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
