I welcome new City of Gold Coast (Council) Chief Executive Officer David Edwards. Previously a senior bureaucrat in the Queensland Government, David brings to the role considerable experience in managing major projects – business know-how that will prove instrumental in helping to transform the Southport CBD back to its former yesteryear glory.
In other news, I recently held a ‘mobile office’ with a difference in Southport where I caught up with several homeless locals; speaking to each person individually and listening to their respective back stories and challenges.
I believe the only sustainable solution to ending long-term cyclical homelessness and associated anti-social behaviour in Division 6 will be a ‘Common Ground’ facility – a supportive and affordable housing model that seeks to support the homeless and those suffering from disability and mental health issues. Tenants who meet specific eligibility requirements set out by the Department of Housing are offered accommodation supported with dedicated on-site support services.
Five Australian States and one territory are now home to ‘Common Ground’ developments. Completed in 2012 with federal funding, Brisbane’s ‘Common Ground’ development is a 14-storey apartment building situated in the arts precinct of South Brisbane. Rob Molhoek MP has joined me in advocating for a similar Gold Coast development to become reality.
