Southport Update Report

 

We are now at Stage 3 for the Southport CBD.

 

First stage was ‘Clean and Safe CBD’. Over the past five months our disciplined effort has led to sustainable results in reducing homelessness and anti-social behaviour. I am grateful to the police and the Department of Housing for partnering with us on this. I am pleased with what we have achieved to date and you have my word to maintain focus on this fundamental matter for our CBD.

 

Second stage was review of the Priority Development Area for Southport. I have been clear in my belief that the PDA, although established with great intentions, is the wrong planning tool and has in fact exacerbated problems of land banking in Southport. In our most recent Council meeting, I’m pleased to have received unanimous support to action the review of the PDA.

 

Now we have the safety of the CBD stabilised and the PDA review underway, the real game changer project of Stage 3 is my priority. This involves an unprecedented commitment from local, state and federal governments to our CBD. Works are now underway with an intention for the key recommendation to be presented to Council in the second half of 2021.

 

In the meantime, the Special Entertainment Precinct is expected to be presented and voted on at the next Council meeting and I look forward to giving you an update on how what that means for our CBD that next month.
