President's Report - June 2022
I begin this month’s Presidents Update with a big welcome to our new Gold Members, Small Business Expo, Rob Molhoek Member for Southport and Feddersen Consulting Group. I’m delighted that we have now exceeded the opportunity for Gold Membership, with all 12 spaces now occupied by local businesses.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland March Quarter report has been released for the Gold Coast, and it's not all doom and gloom for local businesses.
Business confidence improved in the March quarter with Gold Coast businesses confident that the future of the state and national economies will remarkedly improve over the next 12 months. General business conditions and total sales revenue also improved, with growth anticipated to occur in the June quarter.
With Covid business restrictions now largely gone, and the federal election behind us, businesses are now facing new challenges with considerable increases in business operating costs, rising wages and wage on-costs, rising interest rates, business insurance and electricity rates.
I was able to share some thoughts in the Gold Coast Bulletin. Read the full article here.

It was with great sadness last month when I heard of the passing of Neil Andersen OAM, just four months shy of his 100th birthday.
Neil was a Life Member of the Southport Chamber of Commerce and served as President from 1966 to 1974.
Neil first moved to Southport in 1948 and soon established a successful bakery business in Southport. He later opened an additional two shops with the main shop known as “The Pantry” situated right in the heart of Southport on the corner of Nerang and Scarborough Streets at what was then known as Careys Corner.
Thank you to Neil’s daughter Denise who was able to share some treasured pictures with me, including the first image with Southport Chamber of Commerce Board Members, the second image, showing Neil standing outside his Southport shop "The Pantry" and the third image, pictured with former State Member for Albert, Cec Carey, and then Mayor, Ernest Harley.
What a wonderful legacy Neil leaves after a life filled with so many years of meaningful volunteer and community work with many Southport organisations.
On behalf of the current Southport Chamber of Commerce board, Vale Neil Andersen.
It was a pleasure to host our most recent Southport Chamber of Commerce Business Breakfast for Queensland Small Business Month with the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training.
Over 60 local business representatives joined us bright and early at the Southport Golf Club to hear from Regional Director, Brett Haagsma and RDA Gold Coast Director Estella Rodighiero. Estella provided an engaging and informative address highlighting the Gold Coast’s emerging sectors and their ability to be strong economic contributors to the City’s economy.
It was also brilliant to welcome Department of Employment, Small Business and Training Director General Warwick Agnew to the Gold Coast to speak with local Southport business owners at the event.

The city's newest festival, BIG CITY LIGHTS*, have just released their full festival program.
Over four nights in July the Southport CBD will be transformed with large-scale projections, laneway activations and insta-grammable art installations,
BIG CITY LIGHTS* is a first for South-East Queensland. It’s been brought to life by the team at Placemakers* Gold Coast and made possible through investment from the Federal Government’s RISE initiative, the Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast.
