March 2021 - Presidents Report
It is hard to believe that it is nearly a year since the Gold Coast faced any direct Covid restrictions other than the impacts of domestic and international border closures. At the time of writing we have been on the periphery of the Greater Brisbane lockdown with some restrictions including mask wearing.
The more immediate and devasting problem is that various states are discouraging travel to Queensland for Easter. Job Keeper has just ended and small businesses on the Gold Coast desperately needed the boost that a strong Easter trade could bring for our economy.
We can’t afford any more uncertainty for business and the State and Federal Government must roll out vaccinations across the entire population as soon as practicably possible so that, irrespective of future outbreaks, the management process is no longer lockdowns and border closures but simply an acceptance of community transmission with the protection of vaccination.
There is an appetite from Gold Coast businesses for getting on with business in the new normal but that won’t happen fast enough if there is uncertainty about freedom of movement and travel.
