We need to get serious about Housing

Wednesday, 17 February 2021

In January I reported that close to 26,397 applications are still on the social housing wait list, including 16,270 considered of ‘critical need’. This waitlist also includes more than 2,700 families from the Gold Coast.

Sadly, Labor axed the LNP’s social housing program back in 2015 and cut the Logan and Gold Coast Housing Revitalisation projects. Had these projects been fully realized we could’ve had significantly more social housing by now to help reduce these waiting lists.

the meantime, our states debt is set to skyrocket to $130 billion under this Labor Government. Surely it would be of great benefit to set aside $1 billion a year of this to employ more builders for the construction of an extra 2,000 homes a year?

Even the Victorian State Government has announced its plans for a $5.3 billion investment into social and affordable housing which will construct 9,300 new social housing units and 2,900 new affordable homes to support low to moderate income earners.

With the Gold Coast population set to rise by a further 3% per annum over the next decade. More of the same is just not going to cut it. I will be fighting for as serious investment in social housing by the Government.
