Update from Rob Molhoek MP MAICD

Throughout estimates and in every media and ministerial statement, the Premier continually refers to unprecedented and unexpected growth as the excuse for our current housing, health, and transport crisis. These are the three biggest issues I hear about from Southport locals, from homelessness to ambulance ramping, Southport is not immune to the poor management of our state, and the lack of appropriate social housing investment is exacerbating our homelessness problem.

It’s bad enough that the Gold Coast has consistently received less than half its fair share of public housing investment year on year over the past decade. It’s an absolute insult that Southport received only $1.2m (0.3%) of the state’s $442m capital works budget in 2021-22, and equally as concerning that the Gold Coast will only receive $29m (6.5%) with almost 15% of the State’s total population. It is unacceptable and will not address the problems a growing city like ours is facing.
According to the Queensland State Government’s own projections, the population in December 2021 is where they expected it. It was not unexpected growth; they have simply failed to plan!
They have ignored their own projections and we are paying the costs.
Enough is enough, we need strong leadership and planning. If we work together on solutions, we can overcome the current crises our city, and greater Queensland, is facing.
I will continue to hold the government accountable for their actions and will continue to call for increased social housing investment in Southport to meet the ever-increasing demand and reduce instances of homelessness across our community.
Yours Sincerely,
