Special Entertainment Precinct (SEP) moves to next stage
In line with the Council endorsed Music Action Plan, the introduction of a Special Entertainment Precinct (SEP) in Southport will protect and encourage opportunities for Southport to be a hub for live music. A vibrant destination where locals can see world class artists.
In line with the Council endorsed Music Action Plan, the introduction of a Special Entertainment Precinct (SEP) in Southport will protect and encourage opportunities for Southport to be a hub for live music. A vibrant destination where locals can see world class artists.
To enable this, the City has proposed a SEP Sub-precinct in Precinct 1 – CBD of the Southport PDA, featuring an Established Core and an Emerging Core. The City has also proposed to allow micro-breweries to establish within Precinct 1 – CBD. These changes require amendments to the Southport PDA Development Scheme, City Plan and local laws.
Public consultation on the proposal occurred throughout November-December last year. The City received 314 submissions, 86% of which were in support of the amendment package. It was great to see the Southport Chamber of Commerce back the initiative and overwhelming support from its members.
At its March meeting, the Council’s Planning Committee reviewed the draft submission report, and the final Southport PDA Development Scheme amendment package. This now moves to the full Council who will consider it on April 1.
Once endorsed by Council, the amendment package will be provided to Economic Development Queensland, for the Minister for Economic Development Queensland to adopt. If adopted, the amended Development Scheme will take effect as soon as it is gazetted (anticipated in May / June 2022). The Council will then be in a position to adopt the proposed local law amendments and a City Plan Minor amendment mid-year.
This is an exciting time for the city. The SEP is a major part of transforming Southport into a vibrant CBD where locals and visitors alike want to come to work, live, and play.
