Last week, the Queensland Parliament passed the Small Business Commissioner Bill 2021, which permanently establishes a Queensland Small Business Commissioner and a supporting office for the Commissioner. The permanent Commissioner will provide tailored support and advice to Queensland small businesses and provide timely and affordable access to justice through the permanent commissioner’s dispute resolution function, which relates to retail tenancy disputes and enable mediation for commercial leasing and small business franchise disputes on an opt-in basis only.

The current Small Business Commissioner was setup on a temporary basis, focused primarily on managing and responding to COVID-19 impacts and the permanency will help transition the role to one with wider application to support small businesses. The existing Small Business Commissioner has done a good job, and the LNP fought to ensure the position of the Small Business Commission is supported with a genuine commitment to Small and Family Business at a time where business confidence is low.

As many of you would know, a recent CCIQ pulse survey showed business confidence down 16.9% on the previous quarter, with revenue and employment both also down on the previous quarter. This is why, in addition to a Small Business Commissioner with the power to actually help our struggling businesses, the LNP has called on the Government to deliver a support package, including targeted grants, payroll tax relief and sick leave cover, as well as improved communication and transparency around COVID-19 restrictions and health directives for small businesses.

If there’s anything I can do to help your business, please contact my office on 5600 1100 or via email at southport@parliament.qld.gov.au.
